Company-wide FSC certification strengthens Sage offer

Catalyst was among the first paper producers to respond to the demand for verification that the fibre we use comes from well-managed forests. But as with all things sustainability-related, this is more journey than destination and we’re pleased to have reached another key milestone.

We’ve just achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody and controlled wood certifications covering all three of our Canadian mills. That means we can include FSC products under our Sage product offer – a line of specialty papers that combines fibre certification with carbon-neutral manufacturing and detailed product-specific environmental data.

The chain-of-custody certification enables us to label specific specialty printing papers as being made with fibre from FSC-certified forests – a type of fibre that we’re actively working to expand our supplies of. We’ll also now apply FSC’s controlled wood label to our Crofton pulp production, providing a range of assurances to the customers who use it.

These new certifications complement existing FSC certification for recycled production from our Snowflake mill, and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) systems that we already have at our Canadian mills.

And it’s one more way that we make sure our products meet high quality and service standards and that they offer premium sustainability attributes well-recognized by customers.

Certification Key Facts

  1. Approximately 10% of the world’s wood products are produced from illegally harvested wood.
  2. Illegal logging is bad since it causes great environmental and social damage without the full economic benefits that sustainably managed forests provide.
  3. Certified fiber is good for everyone; it protects forests from illegal harvest and paper customers from controversial fiber.
  4. Only 10% of the world’s forests are certified today.
  5. 73% of Canadian forests are certified to PEFC standards and 27% to the FSC standard.
  6. 31% of FSC forests in BC are certified to the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative of which Catalyst is a founding member.
  7. Both Canada and the United States saw increases in their forested area between 2005 and 2010.

Catalyst Cares About Certification

Catalyst does not harvest forests on either public or private land. Instead, we buy the fibre we use to make paper from a large group of suppliers.

To serve our customers well, we believe we have an obligation to ensure the fibre we buy can be traced back to responsible practices. We strongly support forest management certification as a way to validate claims made about the fibre we use.
